Start the Week on Radio 4

On Start the Week, broadcast on 24th May, the psychologist Dorothy Rowe asks why we lie. Andrew Marr confronts death with the neuroscientist David Eagleman, who has written a series of stories about the afterlife. Ian Buruma reflects on democracy and religion around the world, and viewing it all from the sidelines is Simon Baker, co-curator of an exhibition about voyeurism and photography.

No one likes being lied to, and yet everyone tells lies, both to other people and to themselves. The psychologist Dorothy Rowe describes the different varieties of lie, from the seemingly innocent white lie to the lies we call beliefs. She explains why we need to face up to some hard truths, and how collective lies often prove disastrous.

Why We Lie

Why We Lie by Dorothy Rowe (Fourth Estate). In her previous books Dorothy Rowe has managed to unpick most of the things that bother us in everyday life, from worrying about money to believing in a punitive God. Here she asks why we tell lies and puts the answer down to a mixture of vanity and terror. All pretty toxic, as far as personal relationships are concerned, but Rowe goes further: our failure to tell the truth is behind all manner of ills, from the current economic crisis to global warming. Scary stuff, but Rowe is so wise that you begin to think it might be possible to change. KH
