Naipaul, Piers Paul Read, Paul Theroux, Colin Thubron and Gavin Young. In 1984, by acquisition and in partnership with Brian Stone, Gillon Aitken formed an association with Hughes Massie Limited, founded in 1905 and agents inter alia for Agatha Christie and, in the British market only, J. D. Salinger and Harper Lee. Then known as Aitken & Stone Limited, in 1998 the company's name reverted to Gillon Aitken Associates Ltd following Brian Stone's retirement. 1998 also saw the appointment of Clare Alexander to a prominent role in the affairs of the agency, whose strong development in recent years has owed much to her experience and contribution - as it has to the long-standing direction of Sally Riley in the area of foreign language rights, on which the company has traditionally placed much emphasis.
